1985 Volkswagen

Vanagon GL Westfalia 4-Speed

What We Like

Long before the term "overlanding" was coined, people loved and utilized the Volkswagen Vanagon to explore the world. This Westfalia example is outfitted with a pop-top tent, sink, stove, refrigerator, and moveable interior components to help create a home-away-from-home just minutes after you've parked at your destination. The selling dealer added a Bus Depot awning and states the vehicle was repainted in 2019. Work completed under the seller in June 2022 includes installing new stainless coolant lines, stainless push rod tubes, exterior mirrors, and replacement of various seals and gaskets. This Vanagon Westfalia is ready to take its next owner on many adventures.

Seller Information

Vehicle History & Overview

The included accident-free Carfax report shows this Vanagon Westfalia has spent time in New Jersey, Hawaii, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It reportedly received a respray in 2019. Over $2,900 was spent by the selling dealer to replace the coolant lines front-to-back, pushrod tubes, rain gutter and bumper moldings, mirrors, and more. A Bus Depot easy-up awning and Pioneer audio unit with Polk speakers appear to be the only modifications.

The Volkswagen Vanagon was released to the US market in 1979 as a replacement for the original Transporter. The vehicles initially featured an air-cooled flat-four; however, these were replaced with a water-cooled flat-four in 1983. The Westfalia model was offered in two versions, Camper and Weekender. Camper versions like the one shown here could be had with swiveling front seats, removable tables, a sink, stove-top, and storage cabinets. The rooftop tent has a loft, and the rear bench seat also converts to a bed. US series production of the Vanagon ended in 1991.
